Huts are great places to stay overnight in the New Zealand hiking tracks. The Department of Conservation (DOC) manages over 950 huts . Huts come in all shapes and sizes. Some hut services and facilities are seasonal only, so plan ahead. All DOC huts are more basic than a backpacker hostel.
