Heaphy
Track
Introduction ·
Distance: 82 km The Heaphy track, one of the Department of Conservation's Great Walks, traverses the northwest corner of Kahurangi National Park to North Westland's Nikau Coast. This is a well graded track and passes through mixed podocarp/beech forests and alpine tussock. It is a easy track and is suitable for almost everyone, all the major rivers and streams are bridged. It is however 82 kilometres long and may take between 4 to 6 days to complete. The tack can be walked from either end and the best time to walk it is in the summer months as part of the track may be blocked by snow during winter, as with all tracks it is best to contact the Department of Conservation prior to get track conditions etc. A Great Walks hut or campsite pass for the Heaphy Track must be purchased before entering the track and must be visible at all times. The hut pass does not guarantee a bunk and there is a two-night limit on staying at each hut. Children under 11 do not need passes. Youth rates apply for school children aged 11 and over. Passes are available at hostels, outdoor equipment shops, visitor centres, DOC offices in the Nelson and West Coast regions and from private bus operators. Times ·
