Ruapehu
Tongariro National Park is a dual World Heritage area and has three active volcanoes
– Ruapehu, Tongariro and Ngauruhoe.
Mount
Ruapehu is the North Island’s premier ski destination, whilst in summer
the stunning surrounding volcanic area is popular for hiking and adventure activities.

Tongariro Crossing (17km, 6-8 hours) is often heralded as New Zealand’s
most popular one-day trek. (Adequate waterproof clothing and fitness are required.)
Other walks in the area include the Tongariro River Walkway (3 hours return),
Tongariro River Loop Track (1 hour) and the 15-minute Hinemihi's Track.
Mount Doom
- stroll through Orc Country on a tour of film sites from The Lord of the Rings
movie in Tongariro National Park.
Raurimu
Spiral is on the main railway trunk line. The ascending spiral incorporates
a complete circle, three horseshoe curves and two short tunnels. You can view
the spiral from a platform at Raurimu.
Owhango,
a base for explorations of Tongariro National Park, is also the home of New
Zealand’s foremost mountain bike trail – the 42 Traverse.
